      Highlights •Counterdispositional behaviors are typically effortful to maintain and can lead to mental fatigue.•Research on counterdispositional extraversion yields mixed results.•We argue that both perspectives can coexist.•The positive affective facets of extraversion do not outweigh mental fatigue.•Concurrent effects of counterdispositional extraversion differs from lagged effects.
