      Highlights •This study examined distinguishing features of upward body comparisons (UBC).•It is the first study to examine self-improvement (SI) and self-evaluation (SE) UBC in daily life.•SI and SE were associated with more exercise thoughts, but not body dissatisfaction.•Person-level moderators revealed noteworthy differences between SI and SE.•Further research on SI and SE may identify protective mechanisms of UBC.
