    • Abstract:
Examined the service needs of older adults with depression following acute psychiatric care, focusing on needs in 4 areas: psychiatric, medical, functional, and psychosocial. A total of 169 adults aged 63-98 (mean age 76) who were hospitalized for depression on the geropsychiatric unit of a hospital participated in the study. Research assistants interviewed study participants and discharge planners and abstracted medical records. Functional ability was assessed with the OARS Physical and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living instrument, while social resources were assessed with the OARS Social Resources Rating Scale. It was found that 75% of the patients had medical conditions that required treatment, and 84% needed assistance with routine activities. Nearly two-thirds were experiencing 1 or more psychosocial or environmental problems that warranted intervention. The mean number of service needs per patient was 6.5, and 57% had needs in all 4 domains. The results suggest that older adults admitted to acute care for depression have high levels of service needs stemming from multiple domains.
