    • Abstract:
      A polymorphic segment of the gene encoding the merozoite surface protein 1 of Plasmodium vivax was used as a genetic marker to compare samples from Brazilian patients with primary infections or relapses. PCR, Southern blotting and DNA sequence analysis showed that the parasite population from primary infections is identical to that during relapses, and that there was a large proportion (40%) of mixed infections. This is a summary of a Masters thesis presented to the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 1997.
