    • Clinical Answer:
For children up to five years of age, moderate‐certainty evidence shows that diet and exercise interventions probably lead to small decreases in body mass index (BMI; on average, ≤ 0.1 kg/m2). Researchers observed similar small decreases in BMI among children aged 6 to 12 years but rated the evidence as low certainty. Studies reported little to no difference in both age groups in the incidence of adverse events such as injury/accident, insufficient weight gain in underweight infants, increased weight or body image concern, and depressive symptoms. No trial used a direct measure of body fat to assess obesity. It is worth noting that studies were conducted in the general child population, not in children at risk of developing obesity.
