    • Abstract:
The Euro-American culture has created an insatiable drive for slimness. It glorifies slim, exceptionally lean, and physically fit bodies. As a result, eating disorders are on the rise. Women who have eating disorders usually have a distorted body image. Body image distortions also occur in adolescence, especially at the time of menarche. This study examined the relationship of age of menarche and attitude toward menstruation to body image distortion at menarche and currently. Seventy participants, ages 17 to 50, were included in the study. An exploratory approach was used to generate new information. Body image distortion was the criterion variable, measured by The Structured Interview for Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. The predictor variables were age of menarche and attitude toward menstruation in the past and present, measured by the Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire. This study used an exploratory approach, as previous literature was limited on the combination of variables selected for this study. Two multiple regressions were conducted. One analyzed the relationship between age of menarche and attitude toward menstruation at the time of menarche and body image in the past, and the other analyzed current attitude toward menstruation and body image in the present. The analyses were significant. Menstruation as a debilitating event and body image in the past were significantly related. At the time of menarche, girls who viewed menstruation as more debilitating had more distorted body image. The Euro-American culture's values and beliefs contribute to body image distortions and negativity toward menstruation. The second analysis indicated a significant relationship between anticipation and prediction of the onset of menstruation and body image in the present. The more a woman anticipates or predicts the onset of her menstrual period, the more distorted her body image. This finding was especially significant in women who experienced menopause or perimenopausal symptoms. Clinical and research implications were discussed.
