    • Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the major findings for the Outpatient arm. The main effects of the three treatments, as well as matching effects, are presented for the two primary outcome measures, Percent Days Abstinent and Drinks per Drinking Day. The results of the analyses testing the causal mechanisms responsible for matching effects are also described. The major findings can be summarized as follows. (1) There were considerable reductions in the frequency and intensity of drinking that followed enrollment in Project MATCH, decreases that were sustained over a 3-yr period. (2) There were no consistent and clinically meaningful differences in the efficacy of the three treatments found in the analyses of the primary outcome measures. (3) Only three of the 21 a priori matching hypotheses (Psychiatric Severity; Support for Drinking, and Anger) received unqualified support, and the matching effects for these attributes tended to vary as a function of drinking outcome and analysis time frame.
