    • Abstract:
Despite the abundance of literature identifying social comparison as a risk factor for bulimia nervosa, the impact of social influences on patients with bulimia in residential treatment settings is limited. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand and describe how patients diagnosed with bulimia nervosa experience social comparison while in residential treatment. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five, adult female patients, diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, and in residential treatment. Moustakas' (1994) transcendental phenomenological approach was utilized to conduct the research methodology and data analysis. The experiences of the patients revealed four essential themes: relation to self, relation to others, relation to the eating disorder, and causality. The essence of their lived experiences of social comparison in residential treatment is presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
