    • Abstract:
The prevalence of eating disorders has been steadily rising in the past several decades, increasing the need for more effective diagnostic tools. The utility of personality inventories as diagnostic and prescreening tools has been greatly overlooked with most eating disorder populations. When implemented, the MMPI and the MMPI-2 have been used for inpatient eating disorder clinics as part of the admittance process; however, there is currently a limited amount of research related to the newest edition of the MMPI assessments, the MMPI-2-RF. The present study aimed to investigate the use of the MMPI-2-RF in an inpatient eating disorder population, specifically in regard to differential diagnosis and scale elevations unique to Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). This study relied on archival MMPI-2 protocols from an inpatient eating disorder population. These protocols were categorized according to diagnosis and then converted to the MMPI-2-RF using the Q-local system. Results of the current study indicated that the MMPI-2-RF was unable to clearly discriminate between patients with AN, BN, and EDNOS on the hypothesized scales. Overall, the groups appeared to be fairly homogeneous, with more similarities than differences. Descriptive statistics indicated that AN and EDNOS patients elevated 13 identical scales, AN patients elevated one scale (NUC) independently of BN patients and EDNOS patients, and lastly, BN patients and EDNOS patients did not elevate any scales independently of AN patients. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
