    • Abstract:
Investigated the drug dependence syndrome (DDS) concept formulated by G. Edwards et al (1981) through patterning in clinical samples of opiate- and alcohol-dependent persons, the generalization of DDS to diverse cultural settings, the relationship to antecedent and concurrent variables, and the value of DDS as a predictor of treatment response. Data representing 16,000 patients in Canada, France, the UK, and the US were analyzed for predictive validity, internal consistency reliability, and significant factors. Results provide support for the syndrome hypothesis; a 3-factor item (labeled Dependence) was found, defined by items measuring impaired control over drug intake, compulsion to use the substance, and drug withdrawal symptoms.
