A thorough literature search and analysis was done to determine whether body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) or the use of a gait trainer was more effective in improving gait in male children with cerebral palsy. PubMed, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were utilized for the search of relevant articles. From the search, five strong articles were chosen for extensive analysis, including four randomized controlled trials and one systematic review. Although there was no sufficient evidence found comparing the use of BWSTT to the use of gait trainers, the articles demonstrated positive findings for use of BWSTT or a gait trainer in children with cerebral palsy. Clinical findings also demonstrated that the use of a device for gait training along with over ground gait training could yield the most benefits for a child with cerebral palsy. Clinically, the use of BWSTT or gait trainers in gait training is important because it allows the child to ambulate at a higher speed and longer duration than usual, as well as allowing the therapist to manually assist the patient.
