    • Abstract:
Nurses must demonstrate proficiency in providing competent, compassionate care for individuals across the lifespan. By the year 2050, people aged 65 years or older will represent 20 percent of the United States population (United States Census Bureau, 2014). The licensed practical/vocational nurse represents one member of the health care team who will routinely provide care for the elderly. In fact, 79 percent of practical/vocational nurses will seek employment in nursing and residential care facilities, hospitals, physicians' offices and home health care agencies (United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015a). Between 2014 and 2024, a 16 percent increase in employment of licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/LVN) is projected due to the baby boomer population aging and their overall increased need for health care services (United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015b). Despite this, studies that examine practical/vocational nursing students' experiences in caring for older adults is nonexistent and represents a gap in the literature. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of practical/vocational nursing students when caring for older adults. A descriptive phenomenological qualitative method guided this study. Purposive sampling led to recruitment of 19 participants from two practical/vocational nursing schools in central Pennsylvania. In-person, audio-recorded interviews represented the primary qualitative data source. All 19 interviews were listened to, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) method. Seven major themes and two sub-themes emerged and included: 1) geriatric education with sub-theme one: classroom promotes understanding and sub-theme two: clinical promotes hands-on learning, 2) reward for student, 3) like second family, 4) appreciation from older adults, 5) older adults need help, 6) older adults defined as a number and 7) familiarity and comfort in long-term care. Findings were validated via a telephone call to participants. This study yielded rich descriptions of experiences these participants have had when caring for older adults. Findings have significant implications for consideration by practical/vocational nursing educators and administrators. Practical/vocational nurses will continue to represent a significant percentage of nursing professionals who care for older adults. More research on this population is necessary to inform the profession and, ultimately, improve care for older adults.
