    • Abstract:
This study examined the relationships among perceived social support, self-esteem, and perceived stress in an adolescent delinquent population. Subjects were thirty- nine male residents (age 13-18) at a treatment center in the northeastern United States. Self-report instruments used in this study were the Social Support Questionnaire (Sarason, Levine, Basham, & Sarason, 1983), the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, & Mermelstein, 1983), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1966). It was found that social support and perceived stress did not differ significantly from college samples, but self- esteem was significantly higher than a general junior high school population. Self-esteem was significantly inversely related to perceived stress, in both a correlation and regression analysis. A significant relationship was not found for social support with self-esteem or stress. Social support from home/community versus the facility made up more of overall reported social support. Consideration is given to proposed 'esteem-enhancing' effects of delinquency and to social desirability factors affecting validity. Implications for future research and for practice are discussed.
